How to Apply for the MT-BC Examination: A Step-by-Step Guide
Pursuing Board Certification in Music Therapy (MT-BC) is a key step for music therapists aiming to demonstrate their expertise and commitment to the profession. The Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) outlines clear requirements and a straightforward application process to help you achieve this credential. Here’s what you need to know to prepare and apply for the MT-BC examination.
Eligibility Requirements
To sit for the MT-BC examination, candidates must complete the academic and clinical training requirements for music therapy, as established by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), or their equivalent. These requirements must be fully met by the scheduled examination date. If you’re taking the exam for state licensure, contact the CBMT office or visit the CBMT website for specific state licensure guidance.
Application Process
The CBMT Examination is a computer-based test administered at approximately 300 PSI Test Centers across the United States and internationally. There are no application deadlines, allowing eligible candidates to apply at any time. Follow these steps to apply:
- Create an Account: Visit www.cbmt.org, log in, and create a CBMT account.
- Submit the Exam Application: Access the Exam Application on the CBMT website, complete it, and submit it for review.
- Provide Documentation: Gather and submit the required documentation listed on page 4 of the CBMT guidelines and the Instructions page of the Exam Application.
- Pay the Examination Fee: Once all documentation is received, log in to your CBMT account to pay the examination fee.
- Schedule Your Exam: After the fee is processed, you’ll receive an email within approximately 5 business days with instructions to schedule your exam with PSI. Your Exam Application will include an Exam Authorization page with your Exam Scheduling ID# and a 90-day eligibility period to book your test.
Important Notes
- Verification: CBMT reserves the right to verify all information provided in your application.
- Scheduling Deadline: You must schedule your exam within the 90-day eligibility period. Failure to do so will result in forfeiture of your application and fees, requiring a new application and payment to reapply.
- State Licensure: If the exam is for state licensure, check with the CBMT office or website for additional requirements.
